South African armed forces have commenced withdrawing their peacekeeping troops from rebel-held eastern Congo, facilitated by passage through Rwanda to Tanzania for their return. This withdrawal follows a decision by the southern African regional body to conclude its mission early after clashes with Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, which resulted in casualties.
