India’s exports rise 9% in April, trade deficit widens to $26.42 billion

India's merchandise exports surged 9.03% to $38.49 billion in April, fueled by electronics and engineering goods. However, a sharp import increase, especially in crude oil, widened the trade deficit to $26.42 billion, a high since November 2024. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal remains optimistic, citing the government's targeted approach and upcoming free trade agreements. Apparel exports also rose 14.
