An international human smuggling operation led to a tragic outcome, as two men were sentenced in a Minnesota federal court for their involvement in the deaths of four Indian nationals, including two children, in January 2022. Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel received a 10-year prison sentence followed by deportation, while Steve Anthony Shand was sentenced to six years and six months.
