Despite West Bengal raising threshold, India achieves big dip in extreme poverty
Posted
Recent World Bank data reveals a significant decline in India's extreme poverty rate, dropping from 27.1% in 2011-12 to 5.3% in 2022-23, lifting nearly 270 million people out of extreme poverty. This reduction is attributed to updated poverty line definitions and improved household survey data. Free food transfers and a narrowing rural-urban poverty gap also contributed to this progress.
