Growing size of surcharge, cess swells govt kitty: CAG

The CAG report tabled in Parliament highlights the increasing reliance on cess and surcharges, contributing significantly to tax revenues, reaching ₹4.9 lakh crore in FY2023-24. However, the auditor raised concerns about the underutilization of these funds for their intended purposes, with a short transfer of ₹3.69 lakh crore to designated reserve funds until March 2024.
