Ever more of the once sacred structures are repurposed for anything from clothes shops and climbing walls to night clubs, breweries, hotels or gay clubs. At the same time, the number of mosques is rising. For instance, by 2000, there were 1,209 U.S. mosques, which rose to 2,106 in 2010, an increase of 74%.
