Panchatantra Moral Stories
The Jackal and the War Drum
Once upon a time, a jackal was wandering in the forest when he heard a loud noise. Curious and a bit scared, he followed the sound and found a large drum lying near some bushes. The wind made the branches hit the drum, creating a booming sound. The jackal thought the noise came from a dangerous animal and was afraid to go near it.
But after some time, the jackal gathered his courage and approached the drum. He realized that it was just an empty drum, and there was nothing to fear. The jackal learned that things are not always as scary as they seem.
Moral: Don't be afraid of something without understanding what it really is.
The Lion and the Bull
Once upon a time, in a vast jungle, there lived a strong bull named Sanjeevaka. He had wandered away from his herd and ended up lost in the forest. One day, as he grazed near a riverbank, he encountered a lion named Pingalaka, the king of the jungle. The lion approached the bull, curious but without aggression.
Sanjeevaka and Pingalaka became friends and began spending time together. The bull offered wise advice to the lion, and they lived in harmony. However, not everyone in the jungle was happy about their friendship. Some of the lion's courtiers, jealous of the bull's influence, started spreading lies. They told the lion that the bull was plotting to overthrow him.
Deceived by their words, Pingalaka began to doubt his friend. When the lion confronted Sanjeevaka, the bull explained that the rumors were false, and he had always been loyal. Realizing his mistake, Pingalaka apologized, and the two friends reconciled.
Moral: Jealousy and falsehoods can destroy even the strongest friendships.
The Wise Old Bird
There was once a large tree where many young birds lived in their nest. A wise old bird also lived nearby. One day, the old bird noticed a hunter setting a trap under the tree. The old bird warned the young birds not to fly down and get caught.
But the young birds, thinking they knew better, ignored the warning and flew down to the ground. They were caught in the hunter’s net. The wise old bird had seen this coming and tried to save them, but it was too late.
Moral: Always listen to wise advice, even if you think you know better.
The Bird with Two Heads
There was once a strange bird with two heads. Each head had its own mind, but they shared the same body. One day, one of the heads found a delicious fruit and started eating it. The other head, feeling jealous, said, "Why didn’t you share the fruit with me?" Angry and upset, the second head decided to eat a poisonous fruit out of spite.
As a result, the entire bird died because of the selfishness of one head. The bird learned too late that sharing and cooperation are important when you are part of the same team.
Moral: Selfish actions can harm everyone, including yourself.
The Mouse and the Weaver Bird
In a beautiful forest, there lived a clever weaver bird. She had built a cozy and secure nest high up in a tree, carefully weaving it with strong branches and leaves. Nearby, a mouse lived in a hole at the base of the tree. One day, the mouse came to the weaver bird and said, "You have such a lovely nest. Could I live with you in your nest during the rainy season? My hole often floods."
The weaver bird, though kind, did not agree. She said, "I built this nest with my own hard work. You should also build yourself a safe and strong home, instead of relying on others."
The mouse, feeling embarrassed, went back to its hole. It realized the importance of working hard and building its own shelter. From that day on, the mouse started gathering materials and soon built a safe home for itself.
Moral: Hard work and self-reliance are the keys to success.
