Kolkata, Nov 13 (IANS) The first casualty in the bypolls for six Assembly constituencies in West Bengal has been reported, as a Trinamool Congress leader who was severely injured in a shootout at Jagatdal adjacent to Naihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district, died on Wednesday.Naihati is one of the six Assembly constituencies where bypolls are being conducted and the Trinamool Congress leader died in the hospital where he was shifted earlier in the day.The victim has been identified as Ashok Sau, a former ward president of Trinamool Congress of ward number 12 of the local Bhatpara Municipality.Tension is brewing in the locality since the time the news of Sau’s death spread and a huge police contingent has been deputed there to keep the situation under control.The Election Commission of India has already sought a report from the North 24 Parganas district administration authorities in the matter.Those behind the attack and killing are still absconding.Aloke Rajoria, Commissioner of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, under whose jurisdiction the scene of the crime comes, said that there had been an attack on Sau earlier also in 2023.“We are investigating the matter. The footage of the CCTV machines installed in the area is being examined. We hope to nab the accused persons shortly,” Rajoria said.As per the latest report available, a total of 41 complaints have been registered with the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal at the time the report was filed, with 16 complaints being from the BJP.Till 11 A.M. the average polling percentage in the six Assembly constituencies where bypolls are taking place has been recorded at 30.03 per cent.The highest polling percentage during that period has been reported from Taldangra at 32, followed by Madarihat at 31.86, Haroa at 31.20, Medinipur at 30.25, Sitai at 29 and Naihati at 25.17.--IANSsrc/rad

Chandigarh, Oct 17 (IANS) The farmers of Haryana have expressed happiness after the Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs decided to increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all essential Rabi crops for 2025-26. Sanjay Kumar, a farmer from Haryana's Rohtak, told IANS: "This decision taken by the Central government is for the betterment of the landlords and farmers. This will save money and the crop yield will also be higher. The increase in MSP will encourage farmers. This step of the government is commendable, which will improve the condition of farmers."Rajesh, a resident of Ahirka village in Haryana's Jind, told IANS: "The Central government has given a huge gift to the farmers by increasing the prices of Rabi crops. Wheat and mustard are the main Rabi crops in the Jind district. Farmers will benefit from the increase in the prices of these two Rabi crops. The increase in wheat price by Rs 150 per quintal and mustard price by Rs 300 per quintal is a good initiative by the government. This will increase the income of farmers."Another farmer Ravindra said that the PM Modi government is continuously making decisions in the interest of farmers."Haryana is an agricultural state in the country. If the farmers' financial condition strengthens, the state and the country will also become more developed. In the last 10 years, the BJP-led Central government has significantly increased the prices of Rabi and Kharif crops," he added.A farmer from Haryana's Kurukshetra appreciated the Central government's decision and said that the BJP government has always worked in the interest of farmers."The government has given a Diwali gift to the farmers by increasing the MSP on wheat and mustard, the farmers are happy with this decision."According to official information, the highest increase in MSP has been made for mustard by Rs 300 per quintal following which the MSP on lentils has been increased by Rs 275 per quintal. Ottawa, Oct 17 (IANS) In a massive embarrassment for Canada, the country's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday admitted that Ottawa only provided some intelligence inputs and no hard proof before accusing India of killing Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Testifying before the country's foreign interference inquiry, Trudeau admitted that New Delhi had demanded the sharing of proof -- something that India has been insisting on till date -- after the allegations."At that point, it was primarily intelligence, not hard evidentiary proof," the Canadian PM admitted in an on-camera hearing before the committee.As he harped on having "credible evidence" on India's involvement, Trudeau also spoke on the alleged role of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi in Nijjar's killing.The Canadian PM, slammed by India for spreading a false narrative, is currently struggling to contain growing calls for his removal from within his party.Earlier on Wednesday, long-time Charlottetown Liberal MP Sean Casey openly called for Trudeau's resignation as the head of the party."People have had enough. They've tuned him out and they want him to go," Casey told CBC News Network in an interview."The message that I've been getting loud and clear -- and more and more strongly as time goes by -- is that it is time for (Trudeau) to go. Lusaka, Oct 16 (IANS) At least four people were killed and 29 others seriously injured following a road accident in Kafue District, about 40 km south of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.Rae Hamoonga, spokesperson for the Zambia Police Service, said that the accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday on a major highway when a public bus carrying an undisclosed number of passengers overturned."Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred due to excessive speed, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle," he said in a statement, Xinhua news agency reported.The police spokesperson added that the dead included a male adult, two female adults, and a female minor.On Monday, five people died in Zambia's Chisamba District when a vehicle they were travelling in collided with an oncoming truck.Fatal road accidents, which are common in Zambia, are mainly caused by careless driving, poor road conditions, and overloading.--IANSint/jk/kvd
